China has become a major consumer of manganese ore owing to the significantly increased consumption by the fast-growing new energy sector, despite lower production of siliconmanganese and electrolytic manganese in 2022 as a result of the country's "dual control" of energy consumption and intensity, according to a report issued by International Manganese Institute (IMnI) on March 9.
The report said that global manganese ore consumption slowly recovered in 2022 when worldwide production reached 58.80 million tonnes, most of which was from South Africa, Gabon and Australia . In 2022, Gabon's manganese ore production exceeded that of Australia for the first time.
According to the report, China produced 6.45 million tonnes of manganese ore in 2022, with Guangxi, Guizhou and Hunan as the top producing provinces . Manganese ore is primarily used by the steel industry, with more than 90% for production of siliconmanganese and ferromanganese and the rest for production of electrolytic manganese dioxide, manganese sulfate and other products.
