BEIJING (Asian Metal) 8 Mar 23 - Dragged by the softening prices from international suppliers, the current mainstream import prices of silicon metal 5-5-3 in Japan edged down by USD30/t to USD2,320-2,420/t CIF Japan from early last week
A trader in Japan revealed that he bought 50t of silicon metal 5-5-3 at USD2,330/t CIF Japan on Tuesday from a Chinese supplier who insisted on USD2,360/t from early last week. "Upon the depreciating CNY against USD, some Chinese suppliers decreased prices to promote deals this week," disclosed the trader on Tuesday. He added that he failed a tender for over 500t late last week as the wining prices finalized at about USD2,300/t CIF upon the fierce competition and sluggish demand in Japan, and he predicts the mainstream import prices of silicon metal 5-5-3 in Japan would slip further next week upon the sufficient supply in China.
Based on a regular monthly trading volume of 300t of silicon metal, the trader expects to purchase around 200t in March, down by about 100t from last month, holding around 200t in stock.
Another trader in Japan disclosed that one supplier who insisted on USD2,400/t CIF Japan for the purchase amount around 100t early last week could accept USD2,350/t this week, but he could hardly get orders based on such purchase price. "Last week there was a tender in Japan, but I failed as the winner prices turned below USD2,300/t CIF as some Chinese suppliers hold bearish attitudes toward the outlook and marked prices down in advance to secure orders," disclosed the trader on Tuesday who last purchased 100t at USD2,400/t two weeks ago . He foresees the mainstream import prices of silicon metal 5-5-3 in Japan would continue to drop next week upon the sufficient supply from China and depreciating CNY.
