Belgium-based Nyrstar is planning to expand operations at its Clarksville zinc plant in Tennessee with the addition of a new gallium and germanium processing facility, one which will make Clarksville the top provider of those metals in the U.S.
The company says that the proposed $90 million facility would process residue from the zinc plant's existing production ponds. It's estimated that the new facility could produce about 40 tons of germanium and 30 tons of gallium in Tennessee annually, meeting roughly 80% of the U.S.'s germanium and gallium needs.
