IMOA: Global molybdenum consumption up by 13% YOY in 2021

Global molybdenum production reached 261,200 tonnes in 2021, down by 4% from 273,200 tonnes in 2020, while consumption of the metal increased by 13% to 277,200 tonnes from 244,800 tonnes in 2020, according to the latest date released by the International Molybdenum Association (IMOA).
China was the top molybdenum producing country in the year with production of 100,833 tonnes, a 14% increase from 88,450 tonnes in 2020. The second biggest producing market was South America with output of 82,236 tonnes, down by 9% from the previous year's 90,219 tonnes . North America produced 58,332 tonnes, down by 16% YOY . Molybdenum production in other countries and regions totaled 19,822 tonnes, representing a year-on-year decline of nearly 20%.

Europe remained the second biggest user with consumption rising by 11% YOY to 58,921 tonnes . Molybdenum consumption in the United States, Japan and CIS jumped by 30%, 16% and 19% respectively to 27,170 tonnes, 23,859 tonnes and 10,206 tonnes . Consumption in other countries and regions totaled 45,631 tonnes, a 29% rise from 35,289 tonnes in 2020.
