Uganda has commissioned a $200 million iron ore smelting plant that could significantly reduce the region's heavy dependence on scrap metal, billets and coils for raw material.
Located in Iganga, eastern Uganda and with an annual capacity to process 1.2 million tonnes of metal, the plant is a project of Tembo Steels Uganda Ltd.
The launch came amid plans by Uganda to follow Kenya in banning the sale or trade in scrap metal to tame wanton vandalism of infrastructure.
Uganda's steel production (for both domestic and export markets) currently stands at an estimated 585,000 tonnes per annum, which amounts to 35% of installed capacity. Of these, 210,000 tonnes is liquid steel production, which is mainly produced through scrap smelting in the induction furnaces.
