Teck Resources plans to close its Cardinal River metallurgical mine in Alberta, Canada, in the second half of 2020, the company said.
Teck Resources had planned to explore the new metallurgical coal area, MacKenzie Redcap mining area. It is aimed at extending the mine's life as coal reserves dwindle . With the completion of exploration in the mining area, the Cardinal River mine was expected to maintain the annual capacity of 1 . 8 million tons for metallurgical coal before 2027 . However, due to the geology and economic benefits, Teck Resources abandoned exploration in the area . Thus, Cardinal River mine will be closed in the second half of 2020, and the company will conduct maintenance for it.
As of 2018, Teck Resources has operated five coal mines in British Columbia, including Elkview, Fording River, Line Creek, Coal Mountain and Greenhills, and Cardinal River. The Coal Mountain mine was suspended from April to June 2019 due to depleted coal reserves, and the Cardinal River mine will also be closed in the second half of 2020.
Teck Resources plans to offset the decline in metallurgical coal production resulted from the closure of the above two mines by increasing production at existing mines, including the Elkview mine.
