China asks WTO to set up panel to discuss U.S. steel, aluminum measures

On October 18, the Ministry of Commerce of (the Ministry) China announced that on October 18 2018 China filed a request with WTO to establish an expert group to determine the legality of tariffs imposed by U.S. on imports of steel and aluminum.
In a statement posted on its website, the Ministry said the U.S. decision to adjust tariffs on imported steel and aluminum in March this year was an act of protectionism that seriously undermined multinational trade rules. Many members of WTO, including China opposed it. China negotiated with U.S. based on WTO's rules, but failed to solve the dispute.
The Ministry, together with related members, asked WTO to set up an expert group to solve the dispute, and China hoped that experts could deal with the case objectively and fairly to protect rules-based multilateral trading regime.
