The Bureau of Environmental Protection in Harbin released a notice on issuing work scheme on cracking down on illegal pollutant discharge of heavy metal related companies recently, noting that Harbin will strengthen controls on pollution caused by heavy metal related companies, fight against illegal pollutant discharge of these companies and promptly transfer those who are suspected of committing a crime of illegal discharge, dumping or disposal of heavy metal pollutants containing lead, mercury, cadmium, chrome and arsenic to the public security organ for criminal responsibility according to law
Heavy metal related industries in Harbin include the mining and beneficiation of heavy non-ferrous metal ores (including associated ores) such as copper, lead-zinc, nickel-cobalt, tin, antimony and mercury, the metallurgy of heavy non-ferrous metals such as copper, lead-zinc, nickel-cobalt, tin, antimony and mercury, the manufacturing of lead storage batteries, leather and its products, the manufacturing of chemical raw materials and chemical products (carbide-based PVC industry, chrome salt industry and others) as well as electroplating industry. Major pollutants of heavy metals include lead, mercury, cadmium, chrome and arsenic.
. By 2020, the city's discharge volume of major heavy metal related companies within key industries will decline by 10% compared with that of 2013.
