It was learnt from Xiamen Inspection and Quarantine Bureau on 22 March that a total of 42 batches of zirconium ores were imported through Xiamen Port so far this year, weighting 42,100t and valuing USD30.7967 million, up by 13.76%, 16.52%, and down by 5.82% year-on-year respectively. The imports through Xiamen Port accounted for about half of the total. According to the statistics, a total of 215 batches of zirconium ores were imported through Xiamen Port in 2016, weighting 382,000t and valuing USD183 million.
It is reported that zirconium ore is a scarce strategic resources, having a wide range of applications in the military industries and civilian industries, such as casting, ceramics, metallurgy, optical glass, refractory industries, titanium alloy, pharmaceuticals, paint, leather, abrasive, chemical and nuclear industries. China is an important processing and application country of zirconium ores. According to the survey, its annual demand for zirconium ores is about 800,000t. At present, only about 10% of zirconium ores are selected from China, while most of the demand is satisfied by imports mainly from Australia, Kenya, Indonesia, South Africa, Nigeria and Senegal.
