In 2015, the antimony industry tumbled with decreasing prices impacted by sluggish global economy and slowed-down Chinese economy. In 2016, production of antimony ore and antimony ingot producers was limited due to enhanced environmental inspection and tight raw material supply. From Q3 2016, antimony ingot prices moved up further promoted by the execution of national reserves, rising prices for material of general purpose, etc. In view of tight antimony ingot supply, suppliers were positive about the future market and held back for sales to promote market offers.
Antimony prices moved on the upward trend in both domestic and overseas market in 2016. According to statistics from Asian Metal, VAT-included prices for Chinese antimony ingot 99.65%min rose from RMB32,500-33,500/t (USD4,700-4,845/t) ex works in early January to RMB48,500-49,500/t (USD7,014-7,159/t) ex works in late December, up by as high as RMB1,600/t (USD231/t) or 49.2% annually. In December, the spot supply of antimony ingot decreased further affected by delivery date of antimony ingot national reserves. In addition, prices for antimony concentrate held at high level and most market participants were negative about the future market. As for the overseas market, prices for European antimony ingot 99.65%min rose from USD4,900-5,300/t in warehouse Rotterdam in early 2016 to USD7,150-7,450/t in warehouse Rotterdam in late December, up by USD2,250/t or 45.9% annually. Impacted by rising prices for antimony ingot, prices for downstream products of antimony trioxide, ethylene glycol antimony, etc. all increased throughout the year.
