Chinese HR strip market quiet

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 15 Feb 17 - Chinese HR strip market keeps dim at present on weak customer demand. Seeing the sharp price increase early this week, customers prefer to hold a cautious attitude and place orders sparingly. Current mainstream market prices of Q235 (232-355)mm*2.5mm*C in Tianjin are about RMB3,400/t (USD495/t) VAT included. Insiders do not think the market will recover in the next few days.
A distributor of HR strip in Tianjin told Asian Metal that the market continues to be quiet for the time being. His price for Q235 315mm*2.5mm*C from Rentong Steel is RMB3,400/t (USD495/t) VAT included, stable compared with that of the previous trading day.
The source keeps his prices unchanged at the moment after the increase of about RMB180/t (USD26/t) early this week. However, seeing the sharp price increase, customers with no urgent need for materials are just holding a wait-and-see attitude now and refusing to place orders. “There are few deals concluded now and the sales volume for last month is about 3,000t,” he said. With an inventory of below 3,000t in hand now, the source supposes the price will be stable in the coming days.
A distributor of HR strip in Tangshan, Hebei province confirmed the sluggish market. His price for Q195 315mm*2.5mm*C from Ruifeng Steel is RMB3,310/t (USD482/t) VAT included, the same as that of the previous trading day.
Since Ruifeng Steel keeps the list price of HR strip Q195 (232-355)mm*2.5mm*C stable at RMB3,300/t (USD480/t) VAT included, the source maintains his prices unchanged at the moment. However, compared with those in surrounding markets, prices in Tangshan are not competitive and customers in surrounding markets still refuse to place orders now. “HR strip prices in Tangshan used to be about RMB50/t (USD7/t) lower than those in nearby markets,” he said, adding that the current price of Q195 (232-355)mm*2.5mm*C in Langfang, Hebei province is RMB3,330/t (USD485/t) VAT included. With a current sales volume of less than 100tpd against that of around 2,000t in January, the source does not expect the market to improve in the following days.
Another HR strip trader in Guangzhou, Guangdong province also reported to Asian Metal that the market remains gloomy for the time being. His price for Q195 315mm*2.5mm*C from Ruifeng Steel is RMB3,520/t (USD512/t) VAT included, unchanged compared with that of the previous trading day.
Following the price trend in North China, the source keeps his prices stable at present after the increase of RMB130/t (USD19/t) early this week. Nevertheless, customers can not accept the sharp price increase immediately and prefer to take a cautious attitude now. “Many customers have just returned from the holiday and need more time to watch the market trend,” he said, adding that there are few enquiries now against the sales volume of about 2,000t for last month.
