Capstone Mining plans to produce battery-grade cobalt sulfate in Chile

Canadian-based Capstone Mining Corp. is considering to produce 22,600tpy of battery-grade cobalt sulfate from the Santo Domingo copper-iron-gold project in Chile, which is owned 70% by Capstone Mining and 30% by Korea Resources Corporation.
Construction at the Santo Domingo project is expected to start this year, but the company recently updated its technical report to include an opportunity involving cobalt.
Originally, investment was set at US$1.51bn, but the cobalt complex would raise capex to US$2.18bn. Mine life is 18 years, with cobalt production starting in the third year. Capstone Mining aims to produce 10.4 million pounds of cobalt per year in the form of 22,600tpy of battery-grade cobalt sulfate per year over the mine life.
