1 Market Highlights
Alumina plants in Shanxi and Henan continued to suffer losses in September and more alumina plants cut production, leading to weak demand for Chinese origin bauxite and slight lower prices.
Driven by freight rate, prices for Indonesian and Australian bauxite increased in September. Guinean bauxite producers reduced production in September due to heavy rain, leading to tight supply.
As prices for fluorspar and sulphuric acid, the raw materials, declined and the purchasing demand of primary aluminum plants weakened, prices for Chinese aluminum fluoride fell in September.
This month, the price of alumina in China maintained a moderate upward trend, but the alumina enterprises in Shanxi and Henan were still difficult to gain profits under high costs; the operating rate in Shandong and Southwest China was relatively stable. Most alumina enterprises in northern China reduced their production in late September due to environmental protection restrictions, but had little impact on the actual production.
The price of primary aluminum declined at the end of this month due to the sluggish demand in the downstream market before the National Day holiday. The price of primary aluminum remained at a high level this month and the industry saw good profits . Some of the new capacities in China were put into operation.
September is the peak consumption season for secondary aluminum alloy and the output of the majority of the producers increased by at least 10%. Downstream die-casting plants purchased actively but the volumes were still lower than those in previous years.
