In response to central government policy on eliminating surplus capacity of steel and coal industries, Tibet Development and Reform Commission announced recently that there are no steel or coal enterprises in Tibet; but local government tries hard to eliminate surplus capacity in its concrete, sheet glass, electrolytic aluminum and shipping industries.
An official from Tibet Reform and Development Commission was quoted as saying that Tibet will not build new bauxite and electrolytic aluminum projects, nor introduce or approve similar project, and will prevent projects with backward technology or equipment from being transferred to Tibet; but the government encourages to introduce, to some extent, deep processing projects such as aluminum plastic products or aluminum section products.
