China is the largest consumer of selenium in global markets, consuming over 2,000 tons of selenium annually, while global output of selenium is said to be about 3,000-3,500 tons, including 300 tons from China, which may be much lower than the actual quantity as we analyzed below. In past few years, China has already grown into one of the leading selenium producers in global markets but the local production still falls behind its huge demand. Due to the low performance of downstream manganese industry, which consumes about 1,500-1,800 tons of selenium metal annually, selenium demand also retreats in China in 2012.
