The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) recently reported the operational results of China's nonferrous metals industry.
The production of metallurgical products increased rapidly. According to data from National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), China's production of ten nonferrous metals totaled about 32 . 55 million tons in the first six months of 2021, an increase of 11 . 0% from the comparable period of last year . Of which, the production of refined copper was about 5 . 15 million tons, up by 12 . 2% YOY; that of primary aluminum recorded 19 . 64 million tons, up by 10 . 1% YOY; that of lead and zinc rose by 20 . 9% and 5 . 0% YOY respectively to 3 . 61 million tons and 3 . 27 million tons.
The production of processed products slightly decreased. NBS statistics showed that, from January to June 2021, China produced about 10 . 18 million tons of processed copper products, down by 1 . 3% YOY, and the decline was 4 . 8 percentage points slower compared with the January-May period; the production of aluminum products increased by 14 . 9% YOY to 29 . 66 million tons, 2 . 5 percentage points slower than that of the first five months.
Prices of major nonferrous metals hovered around high levels. Data provided by China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association showed that, from January to June, the average spot price of copper stood at RMB66,636/t (USD10,262/t), up by 49.2% YOY; that of aluminum was RMB17,421/t (USD2,681/t), up by 31.6% YOY; that of lead was RMB15,221/t (USD2,342/t), up by 5.8% YOY; that of zinc was RMB21,843/t (USD3,362/t), up by 29 . 1% YOY.
