1 Market Highlights
In early October, the environmental protection policy in inland areas such as Shanxi and Henan became stricter, and more bauxite mines stopped production, resulting in the shortage of bauxite supply and the increase of bauxite prices. At the same time, some alumina plants began to replenish stocks for winter, showing stronger demand for bauxite.
In October, the rainy season gradually ended in Guinea and the supply of bauxite in the country resumed. At the same time, Indonesia began to supply more bauxite, putting downward pressure on bauxite prices.
Due to the greater overstock of aluminum fluoride, prices for Chinese aluminum fluoride continued to decline in October and some plants suffered losses.
This month, alumina prices remained stable. Most downstream consumers only purchased according to rigid demand . Alumina enterprises in northern China only maintained the supply of long-term orders, and the spot market was quiet . Alumina prices in the international market declined and Chinese importers were active in purchasing alumina.
Prices for primary aluminum remained firm this month and most of Chinese primary aluminum plants continued to gain profits and were more active in production. The social inventory of aluminum ingot declined further after the National Day holiday.
The demand for secondary aluminum alloy continued to be strong in October and the purchase volumes of downstream consumers increased steadily. The slump of imported aluminum scrap in the fourth quarter exacerbated the shortage of domestic aluminum scrap supply and the inventory of secondary aluminum alloy producers reduced by half compared to normal level.
