1. Chrome Industry Overview
Chromium is a chemical element with symbol Cr and atomic number 24. It is the first element in group 6 . It is a steely-grey, lustrous, hard and brittle metal which takes a high polish, resists tarnishing, and has a high melting point . The name of the element is derived from the Greek word χρ?μα, chrōma, meaning color, because many chromium compounds are intensely colored . Chromium is remarkable for its magnetic properties: it is the only elemental solid which shows antiferromagnetic ordering at room temperature (and below) . Above 38 °C, it changes to paramagnetic.
China is short of chrome ore resource which can be classified as deficient resource. The recoverable deposits reserve is 10 . 78 million tons including 53 . 6% of high-grade ore resource . China's 56 chrome ore production regions are distributed in 13 provinces (districts) including Tibet, Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia and Gansu, and Tibet holds the most chrome ore resource which accounts for 39 . 4% of the total, and Inner Mongolia holds the second most . China is the world's largest stainless steel producer, therefore is also the largest ferrochrome producer and chrome ore consumer . However, China faces serious shortage of chromite resource; besides, mining and metallurgy of domestic chrome ore is unfavorable with slow development; thus, China need relay on a large number of imports to solve domestic supply for a long-time . South Africa, Kazakhstan, Finland, India, Brazil, Turkey, Albania and Iran hold abundant ferrochrome resources . According to statistics, top two export countries of chrome ore to China are South Africa and Turkey with the former possessing 76 . 1% chrome resources of the world.
