Ministry of Environmental Protection: Minamata Convention on Mercury to come into force from August 16

According to sources from the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the Standing Committee of National People's Congress in China approved the Minamata Convention on Mercury on April 28 of 2016, which will come into effect from August 16
. According to the Convention, new raw mercury ore will be prohibited from mining from August 16 and competent authorities of land and resources at all levels should suspend issuing new licenses for mercury prospecting and mining; raw mercury mining should be fully banned; mercury or mercury compounds will be forbidden in chlor alkali (especially caustic soda) production; mercurial production is also banned; imports and exports of mercury should be in accordance with the Convention or related management requirement of toxic chemicals imports and exports in China.
