As Chinese stainless steel mills continued to lower the purchase price of high carbon ferrochrome, Chinese high carbon ferrochrome prices in the spot market kept moving down. Even though the strike in South Africa had ended, the tight supply of South African concentrate chrome ore had not yet eased with prices holding up. Meanwhile, international lumpy chrome ore prices remained firm, so Chinese ferrochrome producers were under great pressure. As the Chinese stainless steel industry remained sluggish and the market was very subdued during Jul-Aug, many participants were pessimistic about future market trends.
