In May, Chinese ferrochrome prices continued to fall, as many consumers insisted on forcing down purchase prices
. Many buyers were watching from the slidelines with few orders concluded in the spot market . However, due to the workers’ strike and tightening supply of concentrate chrome ore in South Africa, chrome ore prices went up and it was hard for Chinese traders to get lower prices for the material, so they had to raise offers on South African concentrate chrome ore, but the prices for chrome ore from other countries were unchanged . As Baosteel decreased its purchasing price on high carbon ferrochrome for June, the Chinese ferrochrome market was set to go down further with many smelters seeing no profit from ferrochrome production, considering the firm prices of chrome ore.
