In the last 12 months, the ferroalloys sector of the metal industry has been generally active with increasing demand from end-users, but surprisingly, prices have not been as high as it did the previous few years.
While the world economy still keeps strong prospects, policy directions from China aimed at preventing overheating in the economy and reducing energy consumption keep sending mixed signals to the metal world.
And with the announcements by major steel mills shutting down blast furnaces in the U.S. and in Europe, thereby indicating a rough estimate of 8-10million tons of steel being out of production, it will impact negatively on demand for ferroalloys. It is also a common knowledge that steel output has increased over the last two years in addition to the fact that oil prices is softening despite supply worries over Iran and instability in Iraq.
The questions that naturally arise are, how big is the slowdown, if any, and what should the world expect?
China, as a traditional major ferroalloys producer, is changing its role in the relationship between demand and supply in the world metals industry. To better serve the great domestic market demand for industrial raw materials brought by the rapidly and seemingly long-lasting economic growth, China frequently rolled out new policies and regulations in recent years on mining, environmental protection, energy saving innovation and export duty, all of which have had and will have a profound impact on the structure of world metals industry development. How will the new policies further shape the metals world?
Being its maiden ferroalloys conference, Asian Metal, at this well-timed summit, will put stakeholders that include governmental authorities, policy and market experts, industry regulators, influential associations, industry leaders and top producers/consumers to make presentations on and discuss Chinese energy strategy, mining and environmental protection policies, as well as world demand and supply, market competition, Chinese export policy, transnational industry transfer, product substitute and anti-dumping policies.
