Cicheng Ancient Town
Cicheng Town is 10 kilometers northwest of Ningbo City. The history of the town dates back to the Period of the Spring and Warring States. In 729 of the Tang when Cixi County was founded, Fang Guan, the first county magistrate, took pains to seek all parts of Ningbo area for an ideal seat for the county and finally he decided to move the county seat from Chenshandu to Cicheng Town.
Cicheng, which in Chinese literally means a "Town of the Dutiful Son", is related to a moving story of a man. Legend goes that in the Han Dynasty (206 B.C.- A.D. 220), there on the north bank of Cihu Lake lived a man named Dong An, the lineal sixth descendent of Dong Zhongshu, a well-known Chinese thinker. When he was young, Dong An's father died and he lived s simple life with his beloved mother. Once his mother fell incurably ill and on her deathbed she expressed her last wish that she wanted to drink the water from a stream in her hometown. As an obedient son, Dong traveled every day dozens of miles to the stream to fetch water for his mother. Many days passed and finally his mother was miraculously recovered. Learning about this story, the moved Magistrate thus named the county Cixi (literally Stream of Filial Love) and the town Cicheng—Town of the Filial Son.
With its long history, the town is known far and wide as the "Most Charming Ancient Town South of the Yangtze River" for its beautiful scenery, city walls and abundant cultural relics.
Geographically, the town is surrounded by mountains on three sides, facing the Yaojiang River and the Cijiang River. To the south is Chenshandu Town at Siming Mountain. South of the town at the foot of Hanshan Mountain is Cihu Lake, dug in the Tang Dynasty under the leadership of Fang Guan the first magistrate of Cixi County.
The layout of the town is a typical one of a traditional Chinese town, with four walls surrounding a square chessboard of streets and lanes. The north-south Central Avenue is the axis of the town, with the Temple of Confucius at the center and the Government Office at an end. Along the Central Avenue are symmetrically laid out two paralleled streets and six lanes. This layout is a reflection of the feudal patriarchal codes of ethics and aesthetics of traditional Chinese architecture. Thanks to the Cijiang River and Yaojiang River, the town is crisscrossed by a network of canals and ditches and surrounded by three city moats.
This ancient town of Cicheng in its long history has given birth to a large number of celebrities. In the one thousand years between the Tang and Qing, Cicheng had 519 jinshi (successful candidates in the highest imperial examinations), and over one thousand high officials. In modern times, out of Cicheng came numerous people of artists, writers, bankers, entrepreneurs, professors, and scientists: Tan Jiazhen the world-known geneticist, Feng Jicai the writer, Ying Mingchang the inventer, to name just a few. Since the Han Dynasty (206 B.C.- A.D. 220), the town had over 30 men and women honored by emperors as filial sons and daughters, the most well-known of whom are Dong An in the Han, Zhang Wuze in the Tang and Sun Zhihan in the Song. That is why Cicheng used to be known as a town of filial people.
As a famous historical and cultural town in Zhejiang Province, Cicheng is rich with precious relics. In an area of 1.5 square kilometers in the town are scattered with over 100 Buddhist and Taoist temples, halls, and residences of famous people, most of which are Historical and Cultural Relics Preservation Units of national, provincial and municipal levels. There places may be said to be the epitome of the history and tradition of China.
