The World Cobalt Forum 2011 was held by Asian Metal on April 14-16. Around 150 delegates from around the world participated in this big event.

On the morning of April 14, Mr Charles Mubala Nzanku, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Democratic Republic of Congo made a detailed introduction on the basic situation in DRC, especially for the investment opportunities in mining industry.

Then, Xu Jianhua, Nonferrous Analyst from Orient Securities made a presentation on the world cobalt supply and demand. She pointed out that cobalt price will probably continue to fluctuate in the coming 6-12 months.

In the recent years, the competition in cobalt market gets more fierce along with the rapid development. Mr Sun Wei, Senior Analyst from Orient Securities Company Limited made a good speech on the Function of Capital Market on Development of Cobalt Industry.Mr Sun analyzed the function of capital market, and pointed out that small and medium sized companies can go into the stock market to raise money, reduce the operating risk and increase profitability.

Daisy Xu, Senior Analyst in the Minor Metals Department from Asian Metal reviewed the cobalt market in 2010 and Q1 in 2011. We forecast that the cobalt market will continue to be range bound in a short time, and cobalt price will probably touch new low levels.

After the professional seminars, the purchasing meetings followed. Danny Hsieh, Vice General Manager of Mechema Group, Zhang Peilong, General Manager of Whole Win (Beijing) Materials Sci.&Tech. Co., Ltd and Wang Hongjiang, Vice General Manager of Baotou Santoku Battery Materials Co.,Ltd participated in the meeting and interacted with the audience.

In the afternoon, Knight Ren, Vice President from the research institution of Shenzhen B&K Rechargable Battery, INC gave a speech on the lithium battery and its market. Mr Ren pointed out lithium cobalt oxide is now widely used in the consumer electronic market and will not be totally substituted by other materials in a short time. However, in the market of EV battery, ESS battery, and large battery, the positive material is not lithium cobalt oxide.

Mr Tang Honghui from Foshan Brunp Recycling Technology Co., Ltd. made a speech on the market forecast of multi-element cathode materials for lithium battery. Mr Tang pointed out that due to the apparent cost advantage of NMC, the better safety and recycling performance etc, its market share in NB battery is already more than half. With the fast development of NB and tablet PC and the application in EV/HEV battery, multi-element cathode materials will continue to replace the market share of LCO.

Anand Sheth, GM Marketing from Australian Galaxy Resources Limited analyzed the world lithium supply and markets. With the rapid development of lithium battery, Mr Anand forecasts that the total demand of lithium carbonate will increase to 275,000t in 2020.

Chen Bingcai, Vice Director of Decision & Advisory Department of Chinese Academy of Governance, introduced how monetary policy influences the nonferrous industry.

In the discussion following the professional seminars, special guests all showed their opinion on the current cobalt market. It is generally believed that cobalt market will keep bearish in a short time.
