The global economic crisis has also hit manganese and glass industry and thus decreases demand of selenium metal. In 2008, selenium import decreased by almost one fourth to 1,354 tons from 1,762 in 2007. With the economy still growing rapidly in 2009, import increased with participants gaining confidence. In the first ten months, China imported 1,557 tons of selenium in 2009.

However, the downstream glass and ceramics industries stay quiet with low demand of selenium powder. But though the export shrank further, manganese market is in better performance and increased demand of selenium dioxide and then selenium metal. Meanwhile, selenium price followed more closely the trend of electrolytic manganese market. And sometimes, caused by tightening supply, selenium price also went up.

In demand side, China will push ahead the elimination of backward production capacity in ferroalloys industry including manganese. The decreasing output is believed to reduce demand of selenium dioxide in the short run. But in long time perspective, manganese market would not be in such chaos and the performance will improve and benefit selenium dioxide and selenium market. Meanwhile, the rapid growth of CIGS film solar panel also increases demand of selenium in global markets.

In supply side, Japan, South Korea and Belgium remain the first three leading suppliers of selenium metal to Chinese buyers. Import from Kazakhstan, Australia and Canada also increases. The supply has been stable from East Asia, South America and East Europe, which also increases the option of the buyers. Referring to the cost, offers from traditional areas are higher but more steady while those from emerging areas are comparatively lower and more unstable.

Asian Metal will initiate its first gathering of participants from selenium and related fields in 2010. We will strive to introduce a chance for all the participants to focus on the latest development projects and trends as well as potential opportunities with widespread presence and mutual benefits.

Senior executives from well-known major market players in selenium market from both China and the rest of the world will give their unique and insightful views on the development and outlook of selenium metal and downstream consumer markets.

Professional editors from world-renowned media outfits, such as Xinhua Agency, Reuters, Interfax and Bloomberg will be invited to attend and report this summit.
